Coin Noraebang: Find a Song and Understand the TJ Controls

The awkward part of a first coin noraebang visit is often the remote: you know what you want to sing, but not how to find it. Prepare a song number, distinguish adding a song from starting one, and read whether the machine is selling songs or minutes before paying.

This is a research-based introduction for an adult first-time visitor using a TJ machine. The Korea Tourism Organization's Dailycation booklet describes solo coin karaoke and a TJ-specific sequence. Equipment and shop terms vary; the instructions printed beside your machine take precedence over a generic guide. No branch visit or payment test was performed for this article.

Find the song before entering the booth

Open TJ's official song search. The input accepts a song number, title or singer. Look for 곡 번호 (song number), 곡 제목 (song title) and 가수 (singer) in the results. Save all three together so that a number alone does not lead you to the wrong recording.

For a concrete example, the catalog checked on October 9, 2026 listed 83945, Drowning, WOODZ(조승연). That is a TJ catalog reference, not a promise that every booth has received the necessary update. It is also not a number to assume will work on another manufacturer's equipment.

If a title search fails, try the performer. TJ says Korean initial-consonant searches are supported for Korean songs, and some English names can be searched in Korean spelling. The 단일검색 option requests an exact match; leave it off when you are unsure of the spelling. The website supports Korean songs, pop songs and Japanese songs, but excludes other foreign-song categories from its web search. A missing web result therefore does not prove that the wider machine catalog has no such song.

Keep a second song ready. This is more useful than spending paid room time trying increasingly vague spellings.

Read the price unit, not just the large number

KTO distinguishes payment by song from payment by time. Its undated booklet gives example prices, but those examples are not a verified October 2026 rate for a particular shop. Use the actual posted tariff.

What you see Meaning What to establish before paying
곡, for example 3곡 A number of songs How many credits this purchase adds
분, for example 30분 Minutes When the timer begins and whether selection time counts
시간 Time or hours, depending on the sign The complete duration and amount
원 Korean won Whether the amount is for this booth, person or purchase

These are label translations, not sample tariffs. A hypothetical sign reading 1,000원 / 3곡 means 1,000 won for three songs. It does not mean every venue charges that amount. Card acceptance, change and refunds are also shop-specific. If the price screen is unclear, ask 몇 곡이에요? (myeot gog-ieyo?, 'How many songs?') or 몇 분이에요? (myeot bun-ieyo?, 'How many minutes?'). Both are polite everyday questions.

Match the Korean button to the action you want

KTO's TJ instructions describe choosing songs, adding them to a playlist, adjusting microphone and music settings, and using reserve or cancel functions. The following vocabulary helps interpret a Korean-labelled remote; it is not a diagram of one universal button layout.

Label Reading Meaning in this setting
검색 geomsaek Search
예약 yeyak Queue or reserve a song
시작 sijak Start
취소 chwiso Cancel
음정 eumjeong Musical key
템포 tempo Tempo
마이크 음량 maikeu eumnyang Microphone volume

Enter the saved number and confirm the title and artist displayed. Choose the machine's start function if you want to sing now, or its queue function to put the song into a later position. Before pressing cancel, check what the screen has selected: the current song and a queued song are different targets. Cancel is not a promise of a payment refund or restored song credit.

If the backing track is audible but your voice is not, check the microphone's switch and microphone volume rather than raising the music volume. Adjust one setting at a time. If a payment has registered but the machine will not work, photograph the transaction or displayed error for the operator and use the shop's posted contact. Repeated payments are not a sensible troubleshooting method.

Two questions worth settling inside the shop

Can I sing alone?

Yes. KTO specifically presents coin noraebang as a solo option. Follow the capacity notice for the booth you choose. A small room does not require you to recruit a group.

Will an English title have English lyrics on screen?

A title's language is not evidence of the lyric display or a translated version. Confirm the exact song and version on the machine. TJ also warns that MR and LIVE tracks require equipment from its 60 series onward, so a catalog result alone does not establish compatibility. Start with an ordinary version if you are unsure.

Your first visit does not require a long playlist. One correctly identified song, a clearly understood charge and a working microphone are enough to learn the system without buying a larger session than you want.
