The last connection out of Jinju is the most useful starting point for a lantern-festival itinerary. Once that departure is secure, you can choose a stretch of river, decide whether a floating bridge is worth crossing, and enjoy the lights without watching the clock in a panic.
The 2026 Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival runs October 3 to 18 around the Namgang River and Jinjuseong Fortress. The Korea Tourism Organization’s current listing confirms the dates and gives the festival address as 626 Namgang-ro, Jinju. This plan was verified on October 5, after opening weekend began; it is not a report of a personal visit.

Reserve the return, then choose the riverbank
Start with your booked train, intercity bus, tour pickup, or overnight accommodation. Record the correct departure location as well as the time. A station and a bus terminal are not interchangeable simply because both include “Jinju” in their name.
Next, set a personal leave-the-river deadline that includes walking, queues, the local transfer, and a buffer. There is no single reliable buffer for every visitor. A family moving with a stroller, a photographer carrying equipment, and a solo traveler leaving from a nearby hotel will need different margins.
Based on the verified information, an overnight stay offers the most freedom if your priority is a slow evening. A same-day trip can work when its return is secured first. Do not assume that midnight lantern lighting means midnight public transport to your destination.
Match the arrival point to one manageable section
Use the official program and its venue map to select a compact section. For example, the program places one riverside exhibition between Jinju Bridge and Pontoon Bridge 4, and another between that pontoon and the intercity terminal. These are useful orientation anchors, not a guarantee that every path is continuously accessible.
An editorial route can start with the zone nearest your arrival, continue to one viewpoint, and return toward your departure side. Crossing the river is optional. Avoid building a route that depends on several narrow crossings immediately before you must leave.
Three operating clocks shape the night
The festival homepage distinguishes lantern lighting from 18:00 to 24:00 and bridges and booths from 13:00 to 23:00. Those clocks describe different services. The final hour of lighting does not extend a bridge ticket or keep every activity open.
Arriving before the lights switch on gives you time to identify exits, meet your group, and read the local signs. A suggested sequence is orientation before 18:00, a first viewing period after lighting, one optional activity, and a deliberate turn back toward transport. Those are planning choices, not official guided-tour times.

Decide whether a special-show date is worth the crowd
As of October 5, the remaining advertised fireworks dates are October 9 and 17 at 20:00. The remaining drone shows are October 10 at 20:00 and October 17 at 19:50, according to the official main program. October 3’s opening events are already past.
A show date can be rewarding if the show is your purpose. If you mainly want photographs and an unhurried walk, choose a different evening. Greater congestion around headline events is a planning expectation, not a measured crowd forecast. No exact queue length or comfortable personal space can be promised.
Buy only the optional experience you want
KTO lists general festival admission as free. The organizer separately lists pontoon crossings at KRW 2,000 one way or KRW 6,000 for a day pass. Its experience page also lists wish-lantern hanging at KRW 10,000 and make-and-float lanterns at KRW 3,000, with floating from 18:00 to 23:00.
For two paid one-way crossings, the arithmetic is KRW 4,000, below the listed day-pass price. At three such crossings, the totals match. That comparison assumes each intended crossing is covered by the relevant ticket; confirm coverage and any age conditions at the booth before purchase.

Keep food, transport, accommodation, and any separately charged attraction outside that calculation. “Free festival” is not an all-inclusive holiday budget. Nor does the general listing settle every daytime admission condition at the fortress.
Use a dated photograph for context, not navigation
The festival’s lantern tradition is tied to wartime signaling and communication around Jinjuseong. KTO describes the modern independent festival as beginning in 2000. That context helps explain why the river and fortress matter together, without needing to turn an evening outing into a long history lecture.

For this year’s installations, use the organizer’s current program. Historic photographs can establish atmosphere and setting, but cannot tell you which bridge is open or where tonight’s queue begins.
Preview the organizer’s own film

The free shuttle is not an every-night service
The official transport information, backed by its September 29 transport dataset, lists free shuttles on October 3 to 5, 9 to 11, and 16 to 18, operating 16:00 to 23:00. Route 4 links Jinju Station with Gyeongnam Culture and Arts Center.
Check the boarding point and direction on the current map. A listed operating window is not a promise that a bus departs your stop at 23:00, or that you can reach a train leaving shortly afterward. On other dates, arrange an ordinary local transfer and verify its last service.

The transport notice anticipates congestion and encourages public transport. Drivers should use its current temporary-parking and road-control instructions. A map app’s shortest route may conflict with festival restrictions.
Shorten the plan when conditions change
No dependable show-specific rain cancellation rule was established from the official pages checked. Recheck organizer notices on the day and follow closures, especially near temporary crossings. Do not assume that a drone show, fireworks, and ordinary lighting will all respond identically to wind or rain.
For wet weather, choose a shorter riverbank visit, postpone the crossing, or replace the outing with an indoor activity whose opening hours you separately verify. For mobility needs, ask about surface changes, ramps, accessible facilities, and the return route before committing to a long circuit. A scenic photograph cannot establish step-free access.

Questions visitors ask about the evening
Are there fireworks every night?
No. The remaining scheduled dates after this article’s check are October 9 and 17. Recheck the official program for changes.
Can I stay on a pontoon until the lights go out?
The published bridge closing is 23:00, while lighting continues to midnight. Plan around the earlier service deadline and staff instructions.
Must I purchase a day pass?
Only if it suits your intended use and the booth confirms coverage. A simple riverside viewing plan need not revolve around repeated paid crossings.
Is the free shuttle available on October 6?
That date is outside the published shuttle blocks. Arrange another transfer and confirm its operating times.
What should I cut first if time runs short?
Cut an optional crossing or paid activity before cutting the return buffer. A shorter, completed visit is preferable to missing booked transport. This is editorial planning advice, not an official prescribed route.
