Korea e-Arrival Card: Timing, Exemptions and Corrections

Category: Everyday Systems & IT Culture in Korea

A payment request is a good reason to stop and check which website you opened. Korea’s official e-Arrival card is free, and it serves a different purpose from K-ETA. For an international visitor, the useful sequence is to establish whether a declaration is required, check the permitted submission dates, then enter the details of the actual trip.

This article covers the online declaration workflow verified on October 5, 2026. It does not decide visa eligibility for every passport. The practical aim is a correct, retrievable submission, with enough time to fix a mistyped passport number or changed accommodation.

Start with the documents you will use at entry

A K-ETA exemption is not the same thing as holding an approved K-ETA. Someone who does not need to apply for K-ETA may still need an arrival declaration. The official declaration eligibility page lists exemptions including valid Korean residence cards and approved K-ETA, but also gives an important exception: a person entering on a visa must complete the declaration even if they hold K-ETA.

Use the portal’s Navigator with every document that will be valid when you arrive. A previous visit, an old approval email, or a friend’s passport situation cannot establish your current requirement. The Navigator itself warns that exceptional cases may need the detailed eligibility guidance.

For a family, make this check person by person. Shared accommodation does not mean shared immigration status. One traveler might have a residence card while another enters as a short-term visitor. Resolve an unclear status with the relevant Korean consulate before treating an online declaration as the missing permission to travel.

Keep authorization and declaration in separate folders

The K-ETA application guide explains that K-ETA is not a visa and does not guarantee admission. Its approval process is separate from submitting arrival details. Save each applicable document with a recognizable name so you do not mistake an arrival-card issue number for travel authorization.

Read the arrival date in Korean time

The official FAQ describes the filing window using Korean Standard Time. Its example says a January 31 arrival can be declared on January 29, 30 or 31. That example matters more than casually subtracting three full days in your departure country.

For your own journey, use the Korean arrival date on the itinerary and the portal’s available-date display. An overnight flight can leave on one local date and reach Korea on another. Do not use the departure date simply because it is the first date visible in the airline email.

A second clock starts when you submit. The live guide says the declaration loses validity after 72 hours, and also after immigration inspection. An itinerary delay can therefore require a fresh submission. Filing availability and post-submission validity answer different questions.

The Korea Tourism Organization’s immigration page independently presents the same January 31/January 29 example. Its stated update is March 7, 2025, so the current declaration portal takes priority if instructions differ.

Prepare details before photographing the passport

Gather your valid passport, an email inbox you can access while traveling, arrival flight details, departure plans and the address of your stay. Copy the accommodation’s address from the booking confirmation rather than inventing an English translation from a map pin. Keep a contact number available if the form requests it.

The declaration procedure follows agreement and email, passport information, travel itinerary, review, then submission. A passport photo can populate information, but the user must check the result. Manual entry is available when scanning does not work.

Review the fields that a camera can misread

Compare the entered name and document number directly with the passport. Then check nationality, birth date and validity details. This is a proofreading task, not a test of whether the photograph looks attractive. A crisp image can still produce the wrong character.

For a small group, review each person separately before submission. The procedure says a person aged 14 or younger cannot act as the representative declarant. On mobile web, the stated maximum is nine people; larger group entry uses the PC workflow. The FAQ says there is no mobile app, so there is no need to install an unofficial arrival-card application.

Save the issue number, then reopen the record

After submission, retain the issue number and the confirmation sent by email. The portal lets you save a PDF. The official guide says bringing the arrival-card document to inspection is not required, although knowing the issue number can help.

A useful editorial check is to reopen the record while you still have reliable internet. That confirms you can retrieve the submission and gives you another chance to notice an incorrect hotel or flight. Store the record privately, rather than posting a screenshot in a travel group for reassurance.

The guide permits relevant changes before immigration inspection, with limits on changing the arrival date. Use Check/Edit for an existing valid record. If the declaration has expired after a long delay, follow the new-submission process rather than assuming an old confirmation remains usable.

A free service still deserves careful data handling

A Korean Embassy warning issued March 4 and updated March 11, 2026 describes impersonation sites requesting money for the free declaration. Open the official government address directly, and distinguish this service from a separate K-ETA application or a commercial assistance service.

The privacy policy, effective January 1, 2025, describes processing for declaration and record editing. Passport photographs and itinerary details are personal data. As practical security hygiene, avoid leaving downloads on a shared computer, check the recipient before forwarding a confirmation, and protect access to the email account used for retrieval.

If the portal is unavailable, consult its notices and retry through a normal browser on a trusted connection. Do not interpret a technical error as a reason to pay a lookalike site. The FAQ allows submission before immigration even after arrival, but completing it earlier when eligible leaves more room to resolve problems. Do not rely on an assumed paper fallback based on an old travel blog.

Questions before you press Submit

Does a K-ETA exemption remove the arrival-card requirement?

Not automatically. Check the declaration eligibility guidance for your actual documents. Exemption from applying for K-ETA differs from possessing an approved K-ETA.

Must I print the confirmation?

The official guide does not require a printout for inspection. Keep the issue number and accessible confirmation for your own reference.

What if passport scanning fails?

Use the manual passport-entry option described in the procedure. Review every field against the original passport before proceeding.

Can I reuse the declaration after another trip?

The guide says validity ends after immigration inspection. If you leave and re-enter, check whether you are subject to declaration again and submit a new one when required.

What if I transit but must collect baggage?

The FAQ gives specific airport-address instructions for same-day transit passengers who go through immigration. Use the current airport-specific entry there, rather than inventing a hotel booking.
