You open the English page of the Paju DMZ Peace Tour site, see "Reserve" and a list of shuttle times, and assume your Sunday works. Switch the same site to Korean, though, and the notice board tells a different story: the tour is stopped for the whole day on Sunday, November 15, 2026, and the Dora Observatory leg is off from November 23 to 30. Neither notice appears on the English side. So before you book a train to Imjingak, read three things on the Korean page: the closed days, the ID rule, and the 2:30 PM ticket cutoff.

The tour itself is simple. It is the shuttle program run by Paju City from the Imjingak (임진각) tourist area: a bus takes you to the Third Tunnel, Je-3 Ttanggul (제3땅굴), then Dora Observatory, Dora Jeonmangdae (도라전망대), and a stop at Tongilchon village before returning to Imjingak. Paju lists it as about three hours. There is no guide on board, so the decisions are all yours, and most of them happen before you leave Seoul.
The days it does not run
The standing rule on the official visitor guide (Korean) is closed every Monday, closed on public holidays that fall on a weekday, and closed on Seollal day and Chuseok day themselves. The Korean word to look for is 휴관 (hyugwan), "closed." On top of that, the program can be halted without notice for security threats or bad weather, and reservations can be canceled when that happens.
Here is what that rule plus the two current notices does to the next eight weeks, counted from November 8, 2026:
- Sunday, November 15: no tours all day (관광 일일 중단, gwangwang iril jungdan) because of a marathon in the area.
- Tuesday, November 24 to Sunday, November 29: Dora Observatory is closed for road repairs, the Third Tunnel runs as normal, and tickets are sold on-site only (현장발권만, hyeonjang balgwonman). The notice says the repair period may be extended. The 23rd and 30th are Mondays, so they were closed anyway.
- Every Monday: November 9, 16, 23 and 30, then December 7, 14, 21 and 28, and January 4.
- Friday, December 25 and Friday, January 1: both are public holidays on a weekday, which falls under the closed-day rule.
That leaves the weekend of November 21 and 22 as the last full-route weekend in November. If the observatory view is the part you care about, plan around November 24 to 29 rather than hoping the repairs finish early. If you mainly want the tunnel, those days still work, but you cannot book online, so you are competing for walk-up seats.
The bigger lesson: the newest notice on the English board is dated April 2025, while the Korean board had both of these posts by early November. Check the Korean home page notice list (공지사항, gongjisahang) the night before you go, even if you cannot read all of it. Dates and the words 중단 (stopped) or 통제 (closed off) are easy to spot.
Passport in hand, whole group present
This is the rule that can end your day at the window. The DMZ course is inside a military-controlled area, and every visitor's ID is checked before a ticket is issued. For foreign visitors, accepted ID is a passport, an Alien Registration Card or a US military ID. A photo or screenshot of your passport is refused, and so is an expired passport. Korean mobile IDs count only for Korean government-issued versions, so for a tourist the answer is the physical passport.
Two more rules shape your morning. Tickets are only issued to people who are physically at Imjingak, and a group is only ticketed once the whole group has arrived. If one friend is running late from Seoul, nobody in your group gets a ticket until they show up. Minors can enter with an adult guardian.
Booking online does not skip any of this. You still pick up your ticket at the office in the Imjingak tourist area (매표소, maepyoso), and pickup for an online booking closes 20 minutes before your shuttle leaves. Walk-up tickets close 10 minutes before departure. Only part of each bus is usually sold online (Paju says 14 of the 44 seats, with a few departures fully bookable), and the rest goes to people at the window. That makes online booking worth it on weekends, but it is not the only way in.
Ticket hours, fares and the last bus
The ticket office sells and issues tickets from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM, and slots often sell out, which can close the window early. The first shuttle leaves at 9:20 AM. The last ones leave at 2:40 PM on both weekdays and weekends, with more departures on weekends (14 versus 10). Work backward from that: with an online booking for the 2:40 bus, you need to be at the window by 2:20 PM.
Adult prices, as listed on Paju's fare page on November 8, 2026:
| Option | Adult fare | What the money covers |
|---|---|---|
| Monorail (모노레일) | ₩12,200 | ₩5,000 facility fee, ₩3,000 tunnel shuttle car, ₩4,200 bus |
| Walking (도보관람, dobo gwallam) | ₩9,200 | ₩5,000 facility fee, ₩4,200 bus |
The ₩3,000 difference is the small car that runs down into the tunnel. Each departure on the timetable is marked either 모노 (monorail) or 도보 (walking), so the type is tied to the time slot, not chosen at the door. If the monorail breaks down, that run switches to walking. Under the city's fee ordinance, foreign visitors get no discounts, so the senior and youth rates are for residents who qualify.
The walking option needs an honest look at your group. The tunnel passage is narrow with a steep slope, and Paju says wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility may not be able to enter. People with high or low blood pressure, breathing problems, or anyone who has been drinking can also be turned away at the tunnel. If anyone in your group struggles with hills, pick a monorail slot, and know that even then the tunnel itself may not be possible for them.
Getting there: Imjingak is about a 20-minute walk from Imjingang Station (임진강역) on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, or you can take village bus 058A or 058B from the Imjingang Station stop. Leave enough slack to arrive before 2:30 PM even on a slow transfer, because the window closes on schedule regardless of what your train did.
One more thing to know before you arrive: photos and videos, drones included, are banned throughout the tour course, so plan your pictures for Imjingak itself.
Tonight, open the Korean notice list, check your date against the list above, and put your actual passport in your bag.
